SCHOOL MOTTO: COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE

Our History

The idea to have a secondary school within Gachoire sub-location was conceived in the late 1950’s during land consolidation by a man who never attended any formal schools.

In 1974, the then area sub-chief late Samuel Wainaina Gichuhi invited a few people to a committee where he raised the agenda of building a high school as development for his area. The members agreed to sensitize the people and to check on all requirements such as registration, sponsorship, license and few units for teachers’ quarters.

Gachoire Harambee Secondary School was started then in 1977 through self-help community effort. It was a single stream mixed High School with four classrooms, an office and two teachers’ houses.

The high school changed its status from mixed Day school to a Girls’ Boarding High School in late 1980’s since the enrollment had dropped to a dozen by then. In 1989, the school had 54 girls who were accommodated in a newly built dormitory. The school became a girls’ boarding school under the table headship of M. Njure. Boys in form three and four were left to complete their course as day scholars.

Around that time two small dormitories currently referred to as Kenya and Aberdares had been constructed and girls had moved in. The school admitted a second stream due to the high demand for form one vacancies and the dining hall had to be temporarily used as a dormitory.

At the end of 1990 a major harambee was held during which over one million shillings was raised. The money was used in the construction of four classrooms, a staffroom and also to complete a storied dorm which had already been done to the foundation. From then on under the very able management of the Board of Governors and the support from parents and the local community, the school has grown rapidly.

By 1993, it was already a full-fledged double streamed school. In the year 1998, the school had expanded to three streams.

In 2007 the school expanded further to four streams. In December 2008 the middle classroom block was converted to a storied building.

The dining hall and the kitchen were also extended. This was in order to cater for the high population of students. The dining hall has capacity to accommodate one thousand students.

Currently the school has nineteen classrooms, two of which are used as a library. It has two laboratories, a home science department, a spacious dining hall and kitchen, eight dormitories and one computer lab. It also has eight staff houses which accommodate seven teachers and the school caterers.

The school has a population of eight hundred and four (804) students, thirty three (33) teachers and seventeen members of the non-teaching staff. The C.B.E of the school is thirty eight (38) teachers.
